Policy -
On July 1st, 2000, Florida Statue:383.50/CSHB 1901– the Surrendered Baby Bill (Safe Haven) - went into effect. Under this law, Hospitals,24/7 Staffed Fire Stations and EMS Stations shall admit and provide all necessary services and care to a newborn infant brought
to their facility pursuant to this law.
In July 2008, we successfully advocated to change the
newborn surrender period from three (3) days to seven (7) days.
On July1, 2012-HB 1163, An amendment to the
Safe Haven statue(383.50) went into effect prohibiting the Department of Children and Families from taking custody of a newborn who
tests positive for drugs or alcohol and has no other signs of abuse or neglect.
